(670 The Score) Amid his continued struggles, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is continuing to be hampered by hand, wrist and finger ailments, manager David Ross said.

The injuries stem from Bryant diving for a ball while playing left field in a win against the Indians last Wednesday. Bryant sat out Chicago's games last Thursday and Friday and is 2-of-16 without an extra-base hit in the four games since his return.

"He's got some hand and wrist things going on that are still bugging him from diving for that ball in Cleveland," Ross said on the Laurence Holmes Show on Tuesday afternoon. "He's had a couple things that have creeped up on him throughout the season in this early going, but the main thing is his hand. He's got a little bit of a wrist issue and a finger issue that's still bothering him at times when he's hitting."

Ross expanded on what goes into his decision of whether to play an ailing star in Bryant or sit him and play a healthy reserve.

"Just talking to Kris," Ross said. "I trust in a player and their feedback and listen to them, looking in their eyes when we have these conversations and letting them know what's important to me. When I have the conversation of taking care of taking care their bodies and knowing I need them at their best. This game is extremely hard when you're 100% healthy. When you're playing at 85 or 90%, it's even that much more difficult. I want them in a good frame of mind and a good head space.

"As much as we don't talk about those things, I've seen too many great players not have great years because they're dealing with small issues. Those things tend to linger. You create bad habits really fast trying to make up for something that might be bothering you or that's giving you a little bit of pause in your approach or your play. I just don't want that for my guys. I'd rather take some time, get 100% healthy, make sure they're in a good head space with no hesitation and be able to go out there and play freely."

Bryant has struggled in this truncated season, hitting .177 with two homers, four RBIs and a .594 OPS in 14 games.
